Some examples of activities to do with the videos



We think that it could be a good idea to create several activity about the previous video :
If  the pupils aren’t from the same country, we can do:

  • As teachers we can provide cultural insight before is shown in order to prepare pupils. Later they can   recognize the main characters.

  • Pupils could bring some objects from their home.

  • A imitating-activity, for example if the video is a dance , pupils can imitate the dancing way. It could be a introduction step, later on the teacher can explain the reason of the dancing.

  •    For example,  we can plan some theme week about festivals or parties that are very known in their home country.  This could comprised  tasks devoted to understand other cultures.

  •   Reflection on similarities and difference , play some of the  characters in the video.

  •   A journalist ask a characters from  the video why is they did something.

  1. These are very good ideas.

    If you should do them in class for example in English lessons which goals from from that subject do you fulfil with these activities?

    I ask because developing intercultural competence is about adding extra layers (and dimensions) on the subjects in school not replacing them. That is what Lazar points out in the book "Developing and assessing intercultural" and I agree with this.

  2. As teachers we could link these kind of activities with different subjetcs and several aims.

    For instance, this task "A journalist ask a characters from the video why is they did something" we could related to English Language subjetc. In this case, the aim could be: real communication between two speakers in English.


    Children need to be able to communicate with others in order to ask and answer what is going on in the cultural video. Working with an audiovisual material like videos is motivating and funny for children.

    The group work allows more chances for children to feel more confident and talk with others. Of course, this kind of task has and needs to be supervise by the teacher. He has to motivate them, and not allow them talking in their mother tongue ( just few times).

    Other example : "A imitating-activity". This could be associated with
    Physical Education Subject, because chidren have to move and demostrate their imitating ability with gestures, faces, movements,etc.
